Have you made your New Year Resolutions for 2017 yet? According to a Bupa poll[i] around a third of us make resolutions and the most popular are to lose weight, get fitter, travel more and spend more time on hobbies.

The start of a new year often inspires people to try something new and take on a fresh challenge. Those nearing retirement age or already retired especially are often looking for new ways to fill their time once they have finished working.

For many, becoming a homesitter and looking after people’s homes and pets when they go away can fulfil this desire. This flexible role gives people the chance to travel throughout the UK and stay in some beautiful homes in great locations. It can also improve their fitness levels because it involves looking after animals and it allows more time to spend on hobbies too.

Take Peter Holmes, a 64 year old retired police officer from Seaford on the south coast. He joined us four years ago because he wanted a new venture and the opportunity to break up the routine of retirement and keep himself mentally and physically alert.

Today, Peter does up to six assignments per year, fitting them around his other commitments including working in a school.

He told us that he really enjoys the role and said: “I wanted to find a role that would be challenging and responsible. Having been a police officer I am used to dealing with different people and situations. I also wanted to do something that would take me out and about exploring new places too.

“I love the variety the role offers. I have stayed in lots of different types of homes including farmhouses in the Surrey and Sussex countryside, multi-million pound homes in London, as well as average semi-detached houses.”

Peter particularly likes looking after dogs as he loves going out on walks and keeping fit, but he has also looked after cats, pigs, sheep, fish and chickens. His last assignment was looking after two energetic Hungarian Vizsla’s and a German Shepherd.

At Homesitters, we are always looking for reliable and dedicated people to come and work for us as our company continues to grow. If you are looking for a new challenge in 2017 and home and pet sitting sounds like something you would enjoy, please click here to find out more.
