Homesitters Ltd Pets of the Month are these 3 adorable Miniature Schnauzers called Jess (white), Walter (pepper & salt) & Polly (black & silver).

"The Miniature Schnauzer was first bred in Germany in the late 19th century for keeping rats under control around the farm & are still categorised in Germany as a Terrier, but the UK Kennel Club recognise them as a Utility Dog.

Utility dogs are those that were initially bred for particular working tasks that are no longer applicable or those that do not fit into any of the other categories. They continue to play a crucial role as companion animals & are still capable of performing a wide range of tasks & participating in a variety of dog sports.

They are intelligent, loyal, gentle natured & alert guard dogs. Their intelligence makes dog training a lot of fun, but also essential, otherwise you may find yourself out witted! Previous owners of my puppies have taught them to do lots of tricks, such as spinning around & playing dead. One lady has taught her Miniature Schnauzer to come out riding with her & her horse.

They can vary vastly in character, so it is hard to generalise with this breed, some bark, some don't, some are very terrier like & others are much calmer. Some are fussy eaters, others will consume everything in sight. But in my humble opinion they are the perfect dog for a wide variety of families & lifestyles, because they are so adaptable. They just fit in & want to be around their human families.

They can be city dogs, as they are compact in size & not high energy like Working Dogs, but they also have a lot of stamina & are easily suited to the countryside, where you can take them on long walks.

My husband & I have had many different breeds over the years & for us personally the Miniature Schnauzer tops them all. The best way for me to describe them is they simply fit in with whatever you are doing, they just love being around people. They do love their walks, but if you can only manage a 20 minute walk twice a day they are fine, if you want to go on long walks they love that too! We simply will not be without Miniature Schnauzers in our lives - for us they are the most adorable breed one could ask for, but then I am bias!"
