Become a Homesitter in 2025 to boost income, stay active, and save on bills
With rising living costs and high energy prices set to persist, many are turning to flexible part-time roles like home and pet sitting. Leading homesitting company Homesitters Ltd is encouraging retirees and those seeking extra income to discover the many benefits of this fulfilling role in 2025.
Earlier this year research by Legal & General[i] showed 2.8 million UK over 50s have returned to work after retirement, most choosing to work part-time. Of these, a third cited the need for additional income, 62% wanted to stay mentally active, and 32% sought a sense of purpose.
Ben Irvine, Director of Operations at Homesitters Ltd says, “Homesitting offers the chance to spend time with pets, stay active, and earn a modest income while saving on household bills. With fewer people qualifying for winter fuel payments and energy prices predicted to remain high[ii] with increases expected again in January, homesitting is an enjoyable way to meet financial challenges and embrace new adventures in 2025.”
For early retirees Andy (61) and Eleanor (54) Stinchcombe from Lincoln, becoming homesitters has been the ideal way to combine their love for dogs, walking, and travel, after the loss of their beloved Yorkie, Max.
Eleanor explains, "After Max died, I was looking into dog walking as a profession and came across homesitting. It just seemed like the perfect fit—it had the whole package. We love travelling around the UK, and this job allowed us to combine our love for dogs and walking with the opportunity to explore new places. It was almost too good to be true."
The couple highlight financial savings too. Spending extended periods away from their home, they have seen a significant drop in their energy consumption and utility costs. Eleanor says, "We were surprised at how much we've saved on our bills. It's an unexpected perk of homesitting, adding to the already rewarding experience. It's been a win-win for us.”
Homesitting also brings wellbeing benefits. An avid cat person and homesitter, Anthea Hewitt from Stratford-Upon-Avon cherishes the bonds she builds with her feline friends and says, “Being on assignment is like going on a mini holiday, where after I have done my duties with the pets and in the home, I can just relax indoors or enjoy the garden. At home I would constantly be thinking of jobs that need to be done such as ironing or cleaning out cupboards. On assignments I enjoy visiting local attractions, pub lunches, and taking walks, making it a fulfilling experience beyond the primary responsibility of caring for animals.”
For homesitting couple Malcom and Sue Horsup, in their early 60s from Essex who have been homesitting since they retired aged 50, they love every aspect of the job. Sue says, “It has made retirement life even more enjoyable and rewarding. We still get to travel as much as we like but also get to be around our favourite animals.”
Even though the couple don’t homesit for financial reasons they have experienced some of the financial benefits.
Malcolm adds, “As most of our homesits are during the colder winter months, we have noticed lower energy bills, which is just another added bonus of home and pet sitting.”
Homesitters will be on a recruitment drive in 2025 and encourages those looking to take on a fresh challenge to get in touch. Ideal candidates are responsible and reliable people, who are good listeners, readily available through the year, and will be sensitive to clients’ requirements. Proven pet-care skills and a genuine affinity for animals are also a bonus.
