As Mental Health Awareness Week (13–19 May 2025) shines a spotlight on the importance of movement and mental wellbeing, Homesitters Ltd is highlighting how homesitting offers a unique way to boost people’s physical and emotional health – especially for retirees and those seeking purpose in later life.
By looking after pets in people’s homes while they’re away, homesitters enjoy the uplifting company of animals, take regular walks in the fresh air, and enjoy a welcome change of scene – all proven to support better mental health.
“It’s holidays with responsibilities,” says Sheila Jackson, 75, from Oxfordshire, who has been homesitting with her husband Graham for nine years. “We walk dogs every day, which keeps us active, and we find being around animals is incredibly calming. It gives us a real sense of purpose – and we love the variety of places we visit.”
For many, homesitting also helps ease loneliness, provides structure, and creates opportunities to explore new environments without the costs of traditional travel.
According to a survey of UK pet owners* carried out in March 2022 by the RSPCA, around 87% of dog owners stated that being around their pet made them feel mentally healthier. In the case of dogs, even by looking into their eyes – our bodies release oxytocin, a hormone that brings bonding between individuals as well as helping us feel more optimistic and helps lower blood pressure.
“It’s good for the mind and body,” adds Andy Stincombe, a retired teacher and keen gardener. “We’ve stayed in beautiful homes all over the UK. You’re out walking every day, you’re never bored, and animals give you unconditional companionship.”
Homesitters Ltd, which has operated for over 40 years, offeringsupport to people looking for a flexible and rewarding role in retirement and a way of staying active and fit.
Ben Irvine, Managing Director of Homesitters Ltd, says: “This Mental Health Awareness Week is a great time to recognise the wellbeing benefits of homesitting. Many of our homesitters tell us it lifts their mood, gives them something to look forward to, and keeps them mentally and physically engaged. The bond people form with pets is powerful and often life-enhancing for many.”
Whether it’s stroking a cat, walking a dog, or simply having a new environment to enjoy for a few weeks, homesitting offers small but meaningful wellbeing boosts that make a big difference.
Homesitters Ltd is currently recruiting reliable, pet-loving individuals and couples – especially retirees – to join their team. You’ll enjoy free accommodation in beautiful homes across the UK, the companionship of pets, and the chance to stay active and engaged in later life – all while giving homeowners peace of mind.
