Press Release - Take on a new challenge in 2017 …… become a homesitter

Posted on 5 December, 2016

Homesitters Ltd, the UK’s leading national home and pet sitting company, is seeking enthusiastic and reliable people to join their expanding team of homesitters in 2017.

Homesitters Ltd has been caring for people’s homes and pets when they go away for over 35 years but thanks to significant business growth the company requires additional homesitters across the UK to meet increased client demand.

This flexible role typically suits retired people in their 50s, 60s and 70s who would be keen to stay in people’s homes to keep it safe whilst they are away and take care of their pets.

Homesitters get the chance to travel throughout the UK, stay in some fantastic homes in rural and urban locations, and care for a wide variety of pets.

Janet and Steve Groom from Kent have been home and pet sitting for four years since they took early retirement.

Janet says, “We love being homesitters and the best thing about it for us is the animals. It would be too restricting to have a dog of our own but through home and pet sitting we get to have ‘part time’ pets with all of the love and none of the long term responsibility, which suits us perfectly.

“We often have to pinch ourselves to believe some of the homes we stay in. How else would you get to experience living in such gorgeous houses with swimming pools and beautiful gardens?”

Homesitters are carefully matched with clients, taking into account their preferences, personalities, skills and experiences. The role is flexible, offering occasional employment, and whilst the primary rewards for homesitting are non-financial, homesitters receive a modest remuneration to supplement a pension or other income.

The role is also extremely varied not only in the location of the assignment but in the type of pets people can be tasked to look after from dogs, cats and rabbits to the more unusual pot-bellied pigs, llamas and snakes.

Retired nurse Karen Holman aged 69 and from Cornwall has been a homesitter for 18 months. She says, “I enjoy the flexibility of home and pet sitting, I can work when I choose rather than committing to a permanent job and it provides a nice supplement to my pension. If you genuinely love animals you can’t help but get something lovely out of it.”

Alan Irvine, Chairman of Homesitters comments: “Being a homesitter is a fun and enjoyable way to explore the UK, stay in some fantastic homes and, for animal lovers it offers the ideal opportunity to spend time caring for pets without owning one.

“We have seen a huge growth in demand from clients and are looking to employ new homesitters for 2017. In particular, we are encouraging pet lovers who are retiring next year and wondering how they might fill their time to get in touch. Home and pet sitting can be a great way for people to keep active and busy in retirement,” adds Mr Irvine.
