Price comparison website MoneySupermarket[i] found that the number of burglary claims increased by 16% last year. It also analysed two million home insurance quotes over the past two years to identify the postcodes with the highest and lowest rate of claims for home contents theft.

The highest was Henley-in-Arden in Warwickshire, closely followed by the Essex villages of Blackmore, Fryerning, Ingatestone and Stock. Cities also featured heavily in the top 20 burglary hotspots, including parts of Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Cambridge, Bristol, Liverpool, Leeds and London.

Sky News[ii] recently reported that the rise in burglaries was leading more people to pay for private security. While this may seem a little extreme, we have noticed a rising trend in people employing home and pet sitters because they are worried about burglaries when they go on holiday.

We are finding people are becoming more uneasy about leaving their homes empty, especially if they travel regularly or will be away for several weeks, because of the rise in theft and many are seeing home and pet sitters as a good solution.

For people that have pets employing a home and pet sitter also means their pets can be cared for in their home environment, at the same time as ensuring their home looks occupied, which acts as a deterrent for the opportunistic burglar.

The other benefit is that someone is on hand should something happen in the home. Whether that’s a burst water pipe, broken window or fence blown down, someone is on hand to sort things out straightaway to prevent further damage or easy access for a thief.

Our homesitters are contracted to not leave the home for more than three consecutive hours in daylight and one hour after dark, so the home is occupied most of the time. This gives people real peace of mind that their home is safe and secure.

We also look after empty homes going through probate and commercial properties for as long as is needed and have homesitters available throughout the UK.
