Skiing in January? First book your Homesitter

Skiing

Summer ends, back to school, and already clients are thinking about skiing in the new year.

Several years ago, skiing after Christmas was a popular break, but the spring term seems to begin ever earlier – most schools now return on the 5th or 6th January (although Eton and Tudor Hall start on the 7th, Horris Hill on the 8th, and Bryanston on the 11th. (Why is Bryanston so much later…?)

Anyway, the relatively early start of term means that many Homesitters clients now postpone the family ski trip until half term which for most in 2015 will be 13th – 22nd February – already a busy period for us.

Our canny clients sans school-age children still set off immediately after Christmas (when the piste is less crowded and some prices are less challenging), and in September and October many of our bookings are for assignments over the new year.

To be absolutely sure of snow, altitude and a glacier improve the odds considerably.

Clients have suggested:

  • Neustift (try the Alpensporthotel Mutterberg – not an obvious choice, but much to recommend it) with direct access to the Hintertux glacier (also popular with ski teams for summer skiing).
  • Saas Fee (try the Saaserhof) still great fun, particularly over new year; access to the Mittelallalin glacier.
  • Vaujany (small and off the crowded track, but access to the Alpe d’Huez network). Look at the Chalet Solneige.
  • Grachen (the Seetalhorn is over 3000m). We’ve heard well of the Hotel Gaedi.
  • Zermatt – but probably less expensive to stay in Cervinia. And the Theodul glacier is another summer favourite.

When you’ve decided your destination, don’t be too relaxed about the arrangements. Best to book your Homesitter in good time –
