Advice For New Homesitters

We recently surveyed our homesitters to find out what they love about their job and if they had any practical advice for other homesitters – particularly those who are new to the role.

They provided so many interesting nuggets to share with you. Here are their top tips – we hope you find them as useful as we do.

  1. Treat the clients’ home with respect and follow their instructions when it comes to looking after their pets
  2. Make sure you have a preliminary meeting with the client to run through how the home works and pets’ routines
  3. When you leave the home, remember to always take the emergency contact numbers with you
  4. Take plenty of reading material with you as you will have spare time
  5. Ask for freezer space (especially on a Christmas sit)
  6. Find out about tourist attractions nearby – it is good to have a list of interesting places to visit
  7. Follow instructions, don’t feel overwhelmed and enjoy the experience
  8. Take your own towels and bedding for home comforts, plus an electric blanket in winter
  9. Have a Satnav or map of the area so you can explore with confidence
  10. Ask for written instructions on the needs of the pets and house security
  11. Know where the fuse box is, as well as candles/torch in case the power goes off
  12. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
  13. Always be prepared for the client to return unannounced
  14. Relax and enjoy the variety of assignments but remember this is a serious business
  15. Don’t take any short cuts
