Losing a loving pet can feel like losing a family member and can leave a huge whole in our lives. Getting over the loss can take time.

Pets provide companionship, help relieve stress and if have dogs, a great way to keep active and fit. When a bereavement happens, some people chose to get another pet but others have found that home and pet sitting can help fill the void.

This was the case for one of our homesitting couples. In 2016, retired couple Martin and Kristine Bell (photographed above) from Collingham, near Newark in Nottinghamshire lost their beloved West Highland Terrier and while they love animals, particularly dogs, they decided not to get another dog. They decided that becoming home and pet sitters was a good compromise as they would get to spend time with animals without the commitment involved in being a dog owner.

Having a pet can be restricting at times but through home and pet sitting, people can enjoying looking after ‘part time’ pets with all of the love and none of the long-term responsibility, which suits many people well.

Homesitting really appealed to Martin and Kristine because they wanted to keep active and busy in retirement, but also be around animals which give them so much joy.

Martin says, “The best way of spending the evening is having a dog on your knee or by your feet to stroke while you’re reading, it gives us a great feeling of contentment – and the dog too!”

Kristine explains, “We like the fact that we’re employed by Homesitters – rather than being contracted out by an agency. We know that we can contact Homesitters at any time as they have a 24/7 support service. We find it reassuring that if there was an emergency, Homesitters could find someone else to take over the assignment and there’s insurance cover should anything go wrong.”

Home and pet sitting is the perfect job for people looking for something different to do in retirement. It’s a great way to experience new places, pets and lifestyles and be paid for the experience.
