When people go on holidays, their number one priority is to ensure their home will remain safe and secure. This is where homesitters come into play, ensuring the security of people's homes while also caring for their pets during their absence. The role carries significant responsibility, yet it offers a rewarding experience and grants Homesitters the opportunity to explore various destinations within the UK while enjoying the companionship of pets.

All our homesitters undergo meticulous vetting, DBS checks, and have full insurance coverage. We provide 24/7 support throughout their stay, which is crucial as they are entrusted with the care of our clients' most prized possessions—their homes and pets. Our clients rely on them to execute their duties with utmost diligence.

As temporary custodians of the property, our Homesitters are highly security conscious.

Here are some top security tips and checks we recommend for our homesitters:

Understanding the home security system: Prior to the client's departure, homesitters have a preliminary meeting to familiarise themselves with all aspects of the home, including burglar alarms and security systems. They should ensure they understand the system upon arrival for the assignment, especially if time has elapsed since the preliminary meeting.

Conducting regular checks of the house and garden: Our Homesitters inspect entry points such as doors, bi-folds, patio doors, and windows regularly during the assignment to prevent unauthorised access. In larger properties, daily perimeter checks are advised, particularly during inclement weather, to detect any damage or hazards.

Having a homesitter in the house also means that can take care of any deliveries and put the bins out so no one would be able to tell the owners were not at home.

Keep emergency contact numbers to hand: Homesitters are prepared to manage any emergency with the home or pet in a calm and efficient way. They will be given emergency contact numbers by their client for plumbers, vets, electricians etc. as well as an emergency contact number for them whilst they are away. These will be kept on hand so if an emergency arises it can be dealt with straightaway.

Maintain the garden: An unkempt lawn or garden is a sign a property may be vacant and could encourage an opportunistic burglar. On longer homesits, our Homesitters often do a small bit of garden maintenance including mowing the lawn and trimming bushes. During the summer, watering plants is also part of a homesitters’s responsibilities.

Light up and lock up at night: Making sure the lights are on in the home after dark is essential to ensure it looks occupied. Even if they are popping out, our Homesitters will always leave lights on, and they are also advised to leave a hall light on all night to indicate someone is home. Part of the routine is also to check all windows, and doors – including bi-folds and patio doors are locked last thing at night before going to bed. Closing curtains at night, and opening in the morning, can be a good deterrent too.

By following these security tips and checks, homesitters contribute to the overall safety and security of the home, providing homeowners with peace of mind during their absence.
