Our Pets of the Month for July 2019 are these two adorable little ducklings.

These little ducklings are Cayuga ducks, a breed which is listed as threatened by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. The Cayuga name is taken from Cayuga Lake, one of the lakes in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, where the breed was popularized. The Cayuga are characterized by a black bill and black plumage, which under certain lighting turns an iridescent beetle green.

The ducklings came to their owners under very unusual circumstances. At the end of a homesit, homesitter Lorella was invited by the client to take some eggs home for cooking etc… Once home, Lorella and Mike decided to have a go at incubating two of the eggs with a view to hopefully have two nice Easter ducklings for their young great niece and great nephew. They arrived safely just after Easter, hatching a few hours apart. They are now growing fast and getting ready to go to a close acquaintance who’s got a more appropriate habitat for them.
