Why smaller pets are all the rage

Pet Sitting Service for all sizes

A report from Euromonitor[i] highlighted an interesting trend in pet ownership, with people favouring smaller pets because of their changing family structures and lifestyles.

The report points out that as more people live in urban areas these days, where homes can be smaller and they tend to work long hours or have to spend time commuting, smaller pets are more practical.

Also as we are an ageing population, smaller pets are more suitable for older people, providing the companionship they need without being too overwhelming in terms of care.

Here at Homesitters, we have definitely noticed the trend for people owning smaller pets.

Many of our assignments involve looking after small dogs and cats that require care and also companionship when their owners are away.

Chihuahuas, Pugs and Yorkshire Terriers are increasingly popular choices of breeds perhaps because many celebrities own them and they also make great pets for those short on space.

Cats are also ideal for people living in city flats as they don’t necessarily need to go outside and can be well cared for, happy and healthy being indoors. Zoologist John Bradshaw[ii] has suggested that keeping cats indoors can actually be far less stressful than letting them out in busy urban areas.

Whilst we mainly look after dogs and cats, our homesitters are often required to look after additional small pets as well.

Alongside dogs and cats, a growing number of families are keeping rabbits as house pets, as well as rodents including mice, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters and even rats.

We’re also seeing more people keeping chickens – particularly if they have great outside space. Waking up to fresh eggs every day is definitely part of the appeal and they can make adorable and rewarding pets.

Whatever size of pet you have, Homesitters has someone with first-hand experience of looking after them. Our professional and dedicated team of over 1,000 homesitters have looked after every type of pet, no matter what shape or size, during our 35 years in business.
