Are you thinking of going on holiday soon? If so, getting homesitters is a great option to give yourself peace of mind and security whilst you’re away. Not having to worry about the safety of your home means you can enjoy your holiday to the fullest.

Here are some of the things you can do to prepare your home for your house sitters:

Tidy up

It goes without saying that you should leave your home as tidy as possible for your homesitters. This will make it easier for them to relax in your home and removes the risk of your things getting moved or broken.

Make sure to move everything to its rightful place before you leave, such as washed laundry or recycling that needs to be taken out.

If you are someone who goes away often and intends on using homesitters frequently, it could be well worth having some additional fitted furniture installed to ensure everything can be neatly packed away every time you travel.

Leave instructions

Everyone’s house is unique and there are likely to be things that you want a homesitter to know whilst staying at your home. This could be anything from how to work your temperamental microwave to what day the bin needs to go out.

As well as covering any quirks, don’t forget to leave instructions on the basics too, this should include how to work your shower and heating, and which keys are needed for different locks.

Cover emergencies

As well as covering the ‘how-tos’, it is also important to leave instructions for what to do in case of an emergency. Hopefully, these won’t need to be used but it is wise to note them down just in case.

Let me know where your water stop tap and fuse box are and leave the contact details of who you would recommend they contact if there is an emergency such as a burst pipe.

Offer recommendations

For many homesitters, it may be their first time in the area or even the country, so it is nice to leave them recommendations of what they can do whilst they’re there. This could be anything from the nearest place to buy groceries to your favourite coffee shop that you think they should try.

Stock up on essentials

Whilst it is not your job to provide everything for your homesitters, it is helpful to stock up on some essentials for them to use for the first few days, particularly if they are going to be arriving late at night or on a Sunday.

Make sure to have bread, milk, tea, and toilet roll ready to go.

If there is any food in your fridge that is going to expire whilst you are away that you don’t mind the homesitters eating, make sure to communicate this so that it doesn’t go to waste.
